Passing Data into a CFR

I have written a basic report that uses data from a query to populate the report. I would like to find a way to pass data into the cfr to be used as a filter on the query like the following:

SELECT pubid_r,first_n, last_n
FROM userpubs
WHERE pubid_r in (List of selected pubids passed into the cfr)

I was also thinking that there may be a way that I can do the query outside the cfr and then pass the resulting recordset into tthe cfr for the report population.

Can anyone offer any suggestion or point me to a resource that would show me how this can be accomplished?
